Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) Vice President for Global Privacy Policy and General Counsel Yael Weinman released the following statement this afternoon in response to the report delivered to the president today: Big Data: Seizing Opportunities, Preserving Values.

"The report delivered to the president today deserves serious deliberation. We intend to spend time digesting it with an eye toward accelerating innovation through data analytics, advancing privacy protections, and providing policy leadership domestically and globally.

One action item identified by the report is reforming the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA). We applaud that this report points to ECPA reform as a priority. Reform is critical to address the concerns that Americans have about law enforcement having access to their online information. ITI will continue to advocate that this statute be updated to require law enforcement to obtain a warrant, without carve outs, to gain access to online content.”
