WASHINGTON – Today, technology industry trade group ITI, the global voice of the tech sector, released the following statement from president and CEO Dean Garfield following the United States Trade Representative’s announcement to impose tariffs on goods from China.

“If history is any indication, these proposed tariffs will not work and will be entirely counterproductive. Tariffs penalize U.S. consumers by increasing prices on technology products and will not change China’s behavior. Instead, the administration should act consistent with international obligations and work with other countries to address systemic issues with China.”

In March, ITI led a coalition of over 45 business associations urging President Trump not to include tariffs as a potential remedy to address China’s unfair trade policies and practices. In the letter, the coalition outlined how tariffs harm American companies, consumers, and the economy, increasing product prices and hindering U.S. exports.
